SEVIERVILLE-Here we are, in the middle of February, when most elementary and middle school basketball programs have wrapped up their seasons and are thinking of spring and summer sports.

Not the Newport Grammar Warriors. After capturing the Area 3 (TMSAA) Tournament championship on Thursday, February 4, the Warriors have fought on, and now find themselves in the semifinals of the TMSAA East Sectional semifinals. The Sectionals, by the way, are as far as you can go in middle school basketball, sort of the state championship tournament of middle school basketball.

The Warriors have been tried and tested, playing in some tight games, and having to dig deep to make a few comebacks along the way. But, they've passed every test so far, including their Sectional quarterfinal against Robertsville this past Thursday night at Sevierville Middle School.

NEWPORT-We've done some checking, but we're still not sure if it has been done before. If it has, it's been a while ago.

The Edgemont Panthers and Lady Panthers were to have been in a rebuilding year. Someone, however, forgot to tell that to the players.

LENOIR CITY-Cocke County entered Tuesday night's season opener at Lenoir City with four members of their eight-man rotation without playing a lot of minutes at the varsity level.

They left Tuesday's game with experience and confidence that they can compete in the upcoming season.

Cocke County survived a tough environment and beat a tough; Tyler Hood powered Lenoir City team 67-64 in a Hall of Champions contest. The Fighting Cocks used an 18-4 run in the second half to overcome a 10-point deficit with 2:29 to play in the third quarter.

NEWPORT-The Cocke County Fighting Cocks closed the fourth quarter of Friday night's game with a bang.

It was the bang of Cherokee High School's attack in the game's first 18 minutes that made the difference in the outcome.

Cherokee raced out to a 34-0 lead midway through the second quarter of the season finale for both schools, en route to a 60-40 victory at Hedrick Field.

Cosby season ends with loss to Unaka

©2009 NPT PHOTO BY RUSSELL LAWS

Tensions simply ran afoul Thursday night at
Virgil Ball Stadium as players from both Cosby
and Unaka had it out at midfield late in the game.
Two players from each squad were ejected as a result.

COSBY-Both Cosby (4-6, 3-2) and Unaka (5-5, 4-1) were pumped and so were their fans in a jammed-packed Virgil Ball Stadium Thursday night as a playoff atmosphere surrounded Raymond Large Field. After all, a playoff berth was on the line for one team, and the season would probably end for the other.

Following four quarters of smash-mouth, high-energy football, and a brawl late in the game that emptied both sidelines onto the field, the Rangers got the better of the Eagles, and came away with a 21-8 victory, sending the Rangers into the playoffs as the number two 2A seed out of Region 1A.

"It came down to which team wanted it more tonight," said Cosby head coach Tyler Shelton, "and Unaka wanted it more. My hats off to them. They came in fired up and ready to play tonight and weren't intimidated. Their coaching staff had a great game plan, and they deserved this win."

COSBY-The rain and soggy ground did not get in the way of this past Sunday's Navy SEAL Extreme Off-Road run in Cosby, touted as "the most unique running and fitness event in Tennessee". Race creator/director, and retired Navy SEAL, Dan Schreder of Smoky Mountain Endeavors, Inc. actually thinks it added to the venue's already incredibly strenuous race course.

"These runners knew what they were getting into when they signed up, some as far back as early August, so a bit more mud and sloppy conditions didn't scare them off," said Schreder. "Our 5.6Km (3.5mile) trail running experience that includes long steep climbs, an obstacle course, a pond to run through, a creek bed to navigate, a near vertical hill-side rope climb to complete is such a departure from the traditional road or trail running race that our competitors get super excited for this event."
